The Freebie centers on Darren (Shepard) and Annie (Aselton), a young married couple with an enviable relationship built on love trust and communication. 虽然是巴尔扎克时代的故事，但仍与如今的现实相符合。
前半部分以为是「一个记者的诞生」，其实是「一场游戏一场梦」。
可以想象原著的精彩。青年被时代裹挟的故事不要太多。巴黎的浮华世界大概就是他的一场黄粱梦吧。一流的小说并不是最适合改编的，感觉编剧导演有点束手束脚，但是整体还是很有水准：精致的服化道，丰富的配乐，演员的表演。
讲的是一个年轻的外省诗人随贵妇情人进入巴黎、被丢下于是转行做小报记者、借助各路朋友敌人摸爬滚打逐渐声名鹊起、企图重新获得贵族头衔最终彻底幻灭的经历。
爱情，爱情，该死的爱情。

十九世纪的法国巴黎，那些迷失在浮华里的年轻人，都突破了巴尔扎克的文字，通过这部电影向我走来。再有理想和才华，没有靠山，都只是挣扎的过河卒子。小说巴尔扎克写了八年，电影虽然也长达两个半小时，但已经把那个时代法国浮世绘的感觉拍出来了。
时光总无情，渺渺红尘万般妄。
人生本绵长，点点欢喜多是伤。
人们都在追求着心中的美好，但太多的美丽事物只是丑陋的外套。
得亏有文本的厚度。借古讽今了，一路看下来，满腔的怒火。一个最天真的女性就这么死了。

原著粉表示非常不满...作为电影来看，大概是要揭露媒体的力量和恶？但是旁白太多了，搞得不像是电影...

又应了《红楼梦》中那番话：“那红尘中有却有些乐事，但不能永远依恃；况又有‘美中不足，好事多魔’八个字紧相连属，瞬息间则又乐极悲生，人非物换，究竟是到头一梦，万境归空，倒不如不去的好。”
